  • What is a European Tower Shoot?
    These are European-style driven hunts with pheasants flying over trees towards you. There are 20 different stations in a large circle, with a hidden tower in the middle. Birds are released from the top of the tower. Each shooter rotate around the circle, shooting at 10 of the 20 stations. There is a wide mowed pathway around and between stations for a flat and easy to traverse path. Walks between stations are a 30 second to minute stroll. Retrieving dogs will be every couple of stations for bird retrieval, and waters will be brought to out to you after 5 rotations.
  • How long is your Pheasant Tower Shoot?
    This is typically a half day hunt, 8 am - 12 pm. We start the day at the lodge for a light breakfast, hot coffee, and a clay shoot warm up over a pond. Then there is a roughly 5 minute hay ride to the field. The Tower Shoot itself lasts 1.5 - 2 hours and is followed by a hot BBQ lunch and dessert at the lodge. Following lunch, there will be announcements and the raffle drawing.
  • Where is your Tower Shoot?
    We have partnered with a local hunting preserve in Columbus, TX, Top Flight Hunting Preserve. This location is a great middle ground for our members in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. 45 minutes from Katy, TX 1 hour from Bryan/College Station, TX 1.5 hours from Austin 1.5 hours from Victoria 2 hours from San Antonio
  • How many boxes of ammo should I bring?
    We find that shooters use an average of two (2) full boxes, but a third box is highly recommended. Ammo is not available for purchase at the venue.
  • What type of ammo should I bring?
    #5 and #6 shoot is perfect for pheasant.
  • Do I get to take home any pheasant?
    Yes! Birds will be cleaned and packaged during lunch and will be ready for you to take home after the announcements and raffle.
  • What is 'Money Bird'?
    Money Bird is a fundraiser during the Tower Shoot itself, with half the money raised going to the club and half to the winner. 'MONEY BIRD' will be called in the field, and whoever harvests that Money Bird will win! The more people that enter, the more winnings there are to win! Entry is limited to one per person, $20 per entry. Entry is limited to the day of. Cash is preferred.
  • Do I need a hunting license?
    Yes. You must show your valid Texas hunting license during check in.
  • Can I bring my dog?
    ALL DOGS MUST BE PRE-APPROVED. Retrieving dogs only. If you have a retrieving hunting dog you would like to bring, please contact Danika Melnar. Danika Melnar Forthebirds Farms (858) 472-0942 Dogs brought to the event that are not pre-approved will remain in your vehicle at the lodge and will NOT be allowed in the field. No aggressive dogs are allowed. All dogs must be up to date on vaccinations. Dog Handler Meeting is at 8:30 am near the lodge. All dog handlers must be present with dogs for this meeting.
  • Can I shoot with my friends/family?
    Absolutely! We do have a limit of 3 shooters per station. Non-shooters are welcome at our event, but are asked to stay at the lodge during the hunt for safety reasons. Please note the lodge has limited cell phone service and wifi may not be available.
  • What all should I bring to the Tower Shoot?
    Valid Hunting License (Must present at check in) Shells & Shotgun (#5 & #6; 2+ boxes per shooter) Hearing & Eye protection Ice Chest with ice
  • Are there hotels near by?
    Yes! There are multiple hotel options in Columbus, TX right off I-10. These are 5 - 7 minutes drive from the venue.
  • How do I get to Top Flight Hunting Preserve?
    If coming from I-10, exit for State Highway 71 (exit with all the restaurants & hotels). Head south on Highway 71 for 3 miles, and turn right on County Road 102 (by the airport). Continue south on County Road 102 (along the airport) and turn right into Top Flight at the far end of the runway.
